Circle Pack Pavilion at AIJ Tokyo

Circle Pack Pavilion was reassembled at Architectural Institute of Japan(AIJ) for Archieering Design Exhibition 2012.  This event was organized to connect architecture and structural engineering design. The pavilion will be exhibited until Nov. 25th.

Applying for G30

Eligibility for Application

Applicant must be:
  1. A foreign national who is not a permanent resident of Japan.
  2. A foreign national who is not currently residing in Japan
  3. A person who has completed or is scheduled to complete an undergraduate degree in a foreign county before enrolling at The University of Tokyo, which is equivalent to the 16-year course of the Japanese school curriculum
  4. A person with sufficient linguistic skills to receive classes and research guidance in English    
     *Previous study of architecture is strongly recommended but not required 


Selection Procedure
Application process will take place in two stages:

1st Stage:
Portfolio review and assessment of application documents.
Application result will be notified by e-mail


2nd Stage:
An online interview via Skype. Applicants will be asked to present their portfolio and to answer questions concerning their ambitions at the University of Tokyo.

1st Year Midterm Review



Today, we had midterm review with 1st year students. They have been working on the development of non-liner tensegrity canopy, and the review was focused on design systems, aiming for their work to be developed and built as full-scale pavilions next year. The students will continue developing their work with  Rhino+Grasshopper and Processing. Later in the semester, Maya and a structural analysis plugin, developed by Daisuke Hirose who teaches our Maya class, will be used for structural analysis.

Circle Pack Pavilion V 2.0 - reconstruction preparation

Taichi, our PhD student, sent us updated images of Circle Pack Pavilion. It was packed away from Tokyo Designers Week 2012 last week, and we are now preparing for another exhibition at Architectural Institute of Japan in Tokyo.

Circle Pack Pavilion at Tokyo Designers Week


Circle Pack Pavilion is completed. This pavilion was designed and constructed forTokyo Designers Week 2012. Our pavilion will be displayed as part of School Exhibition at Meiji Jingu Gaien site until Nov.5th. If you are going to TDW, please make sure to visit our pavilion!











Circle Pack Pavilion Construction

Testing Circle Pack Pattern for the Pavilion
Students are working to make a pavilion called "Circle Pack Pavilion." It is becoming one of G30's annual events to build a pavilion for Tokyo Designers Week. The pavilion uses shrink film and various sizes of nested bamboo rings to archive lightweight structure. We will update more photos during the event.
